Slovenia

Slovenia

When to visit?

Did you know? Slovenia is the third most forested country in the European Union (trailing only Finland and Sweden), with nearly 60% of its territory covered in lush, protected greenery. Slovenia was one of the first countries in the world to implement close-to-nature forestry, meaning clear-cutting is strictly prohibited by law. Instead of massive industrial logging, foresters select individual trees to be harvested, allowing the ecosystem to remain intact. In Slovenia, the forest isn't a resource to be used up; it’s a living part of the national identity that is legally required to be left "uncalibrated" for future generations.

Peak (Summer): June – August. These months offer longer days and beautiful weather for exploring and days by a lake.

Shoulder: September – November & April – May. Colder days. Less crowds.

Off-Peak: December – March. Very cold days. Likely to experience snow.

Card, Cash, or both?

Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Slovenia.

Connectivity & Tech

  • Network Reality: There is good cellular service throughout Slovenia, except in very remote areas if you are hiking.

  • Power & Plugs: Slovenia uses Type C and F (Standard European). The voltage is 230V.

My most uncalibrated experience in Tanzania

My favorite moment in Slovenia was the paddle out to Bled Island. We rented a canoe and rowed ourselves across that “otherworldly” turquoise water. It felt like moving through a painting. There is a beautiful small church in the middle of the island. We went all the way to the top of the church’s bell tower. Looking out from the top, with the lake below and the mountains wrapping around everything, is an amazing experience. It’s a place that feels completely “uncalibrated” from reality.
