Germany

Germany

When to visit?

Did you know? Berliners have a nickname for the jagged, ruined spire of the old church: "Der hohle Zahn" (The Hollow Tooth). After the church was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in 1943, the original plan was to demolish the ruins and build something completely new. However, the people of Berlin fought to keep the broken spire standing as a memorial against war.

Peak – summer time: June – August. Warm and sunny. The country can become very busy, particularly bigger cities.

Shoulder: May & September – November. These months offer decent weather to be outside. Not as hot or cold.

Off-Peak: December – April. These months are cold. However, you can experience Christmas markets in November and December.

Card, Cash, or both?

Credit cards are widely accepted throughout England. ATMs are very accessible if needed.

Connectivity & Tech

  • Network Reality: My international roaming plan through our US carrier worked well everywhere.

  • Power & Plugs: Germany uses Type F plugs. The voltage is 230V.

My most uncalibrated experience

My favorite moment in Germany was accidentally getting “locked in” at the Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom). I made it to the roof just before the doors closed for the day, and suddenly, I was completely alone. While the cathedral below is a masterpiece, being on that roof terrace in total solitude was a different world. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the best way to experience a monumental space is to be the last one out the door.
