Russia

When to visit?

Did you know? St. Basil’s is not one cathedral, but a cluster of nine separate chapels built around a central core. Each of the brightly colored domes you see represents a different chapel, and each was dedicated to a specific military victory that occurred on a saint's feast day.

Peak (Summer): June – August. These months offer long days and white nights in the north. Warmer days. Cool nights in the north.

Shoulder: September – October & May. Cold days in the north.

Off-Peak: December – March. Very cold days. Likely to experience snow and ice.

Card, Cash, or both?

Credit cards are widely accepted; however, I recommend carrying cash for certain places, including restaurants and shops.

Connectivity & Tech

  • Network Reality: There is good cellular service in Russia with an international plan; however, a local SIM card is recommended.

  • Power & Plugs: Russia uses Type C and F (Standard European). The voltage is 220V.

My most uncalibrated experience in Tanzania

My favorite moment in Russia was far away from the big tourist centers, in the city of Saransk. It’s a small, welcoming city south of Moscow. We were just walking through the streets when we stumbled upon a massive parade. The performers were wearing incredible, colorful costumes and performing traditional dances. Despite being a smaller city, the energy was amazing—the people were so welcoming and proud of their heritage.
